LEED-H Water Efficiency

The WE section of LEED for Homes (LEED-H) is the first section we encounter that promotes conservation, in this case, water conservation.  By reducing the water usage in the home we not only reduce the effects on the environment, we can reduce the energy required to heat water and run pumps.  LEED-H required we gain at least 3 points in this section.

WE 1 - Water Reuse

1.1 Rainwater Harvesting System - This credit is geared toward sites using municipal water sources.  It provides points for reducing the use of city water by catching and storing rain water for use in non-potable areas.

1.2 Graywater Reuse System - Again, geared more toward city sites with municipal water, this credit applies to systems that reuse gray water for irrigation.

1.3 Use of Municipal Recycled Water System - This credit is only available in areas that have a municipal recycled water system.

WE 2 - Irrigation System

2.1 - 2.3 These credits are available for designing and installing high efficiency sprinkler or drip systems.  We offer sprinkler systems as an option, and normally discourage their use.

WE 3 - Indoor Water Use

3.1 High Efficiency Fixtures and Fittings - This credit encourages the use of low flow faucets and toilets.  Using this equipment you can cut your water use by 30% and gain 3 points.

3.2 Very High Efficiency Fixtures and Fittings - Sustainable Designs installs only the most efficient equipment to reduce water usage by 50%, saving water and energy; gaining 6 points.

Summary - Through the use of very high efficiency fixtures we can significantly reduce water used and score 6 points in this category.
